The 2008 season has started with 12 consecutive
days of good weather- no rainouts. We've had some of the nicest
nights for baseball ever so far.
We have completed the interdivisional play for
the year, surprise: the young guys play better than the older ones.
Quite a few games were blow outs, with a few notable exceptions: the
over 35 Mavericks beat the Mudcats, one of the top over 18 teams, by
one run. The Nuts and Mariners also tied games.
Starting May 22nd, we start playing games at both
Sigman Field of Dreams and Newton High School, which is a premier
facility. It's a little long drive for some to get to Newton, but
everybody likes the field.
The sportsmanship so far has been really terrific
on the field. One thing that has helped this year: Dennis Briere,
umpire in chief, gave short talks before the first game of the
season to all the players, the gist of which was "You need to
realize, we umpires honestly don't care who wins or loses a game, we
just want to do a good job, watch guys have a good time, and get
paid. If you're called out, it's not a personal thing!"
I thought his talks were well presented,
humanizing the umpires. I've know Dennis for years and know one
thing: he really doesn't care who wins, likes to see good game, and
doesn't play favorites.
Great to see the basically brand new Mariners
team tie an over 18 team- you never what's going to happen out
there!
See you at the park John
